Calendar of Events
There are many events going on this month so make sure you check the calendar of events. The calender can be found on the bottom left hand side of the home page just click under view calendar of events.
Please remember when putting on your bug spray to do it in the parking lot. When you spray out on the golf course the spray kills the grass very quickly.
The Maintenance Staff
Dave Fox aced #11 with an 8 iron on Monday, July 27th.
Annie Kim eagles #17 by hitting her 8 iron into the hole on July 8th.
Simon Je aced #16 on July 28th with a 6 iron.
Brantford's Jennifer Kirby, 18, captured her second Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls' Championship title at Barcovan on July 23. Kirby took a commanding lead over the rest of the field right from the first tee, firing a blistering first-round 64 (-8) to break the course record and card her career best score. The bogey-free performance gave her a seven stroke lead moving into round two, where she added a 71 for a two day total score of 135, a solid ten strokes ahead of her nearest competitor.|
Inclement weather during the third round forced the tournament to be shortened to 36 holes instead of the scheduled 54. Despite two attempts to complete day three, heavy rain coupled with lightning on the horizon effectively ended the event, with Kirby clearly emerging as the back-to-back champion.
Runner-up honours went to Stratford’s Natalie Gleadall, who has already experienced successful a year of collegiate golf at the University of Nebraska. The Stratford Country Club member finished at one-over par, with a total score of 145 (72-73). A stroke behind Gleadall was Delaney Howson of Newmarket, who picked up the bronze medal.
In the Juvenile (age sixteen and younger) division, Thornhill’s Elizabeth Tong captured the 2009 title by one stroke. The Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto member delivered a total score of 161 (80-81), nine-over par. Right behind Tong in second place was Peterborough’s Katlyn Elliott (84-78-162), followed by Burlington’s Jenna Hague who shared third place with Orangeville’s Stephanie Tucker.
Tong, Elliott, Hague and Tucker will return to Barcovan in August for the Ontario Quebec Matches alongside recently crowned Ontario Bantam Girls’ champion Alyssa Getty of Leamington and runner-up Claire Hernandez .
Our very own Linda Shephard was inducted into the City of Quinte West Sports Hall of Fame at the new YMCA on Saturday, August 18th. Over 400 people attended the unveiling to honour 25 athletes, 35 builders and 39 teams. It‘s an impressive list of athletes, a who’s who of city sports stardom. The list includes figure skater Elizabeth Manley, Olympic swimmer Adam Sioui and NHL stalwart George Ferguson, to name a few. Congratulations Linda!
Our annual scholarship fund is up and running and we have lots of students entering or returning to University this year. On the maintenance team, David Quinn, Rob Cupid and Alex Steurt. Inside the clubhouse, Brittany Ashton and Miranda Hodgson. And taking care of the flower beds is Kate Jones. Squares are $20.00 each and you have a chance to win a 2010 golf membership, donated by Barcovan. All monies are divided among the students. These students really appreciate your support. The draw is taking place at the members closing tournament Monday of the Labour Day Weekend.
